Field Sobriety Tests (FSTs) are used to not only to determine
if there is probable cause to arrest a driver suspected of
driving under the influence but also used at trial to prove
whether the driver was impaired.  There are only three
recognized Standardized Field Sobriety Tests:

  • Horizontal Gaze Nastagmus (a.k.a. "HGN)
  • Walk and Turn
  • One Leg Stand

In most cases the FSTs are videotaped by a hidden camera
installed in the patrol cars.  Unlike the arresting officer,
videos have no bias and therefore give a true picture of what
happened during the FSTs.  Just as important as your
performance of the tests is the officer's administration of the
tests.  In fact, the validity of the FSTs is compromised if the
tests are not administered correctly.  The validity of the tests
can also be compromised if the person being tested is over-
weight, injured, handicapped or over 65.  All these issues
have to be evaluated before a decision can be made on how
to handle your case.
